Welcome to our site about Motel 6 Locations. Here we will look at the history of Motel 6 and also the Motel 6
Locations across the united states.
In 1962 Paul Greene and William Becker opened up their first Motel 6 locations in Santa Barbara California.
they seemed to do fairly well but during the 1970’s a different kind of people were buying motels touting to the
public they were cheaper but just as nice as the bigger motels around the country. They do not have the frills a
fancy motel has, but the rooms are clean and the beds are nice to sleep in.
With a mere 800,000 between them, these two partners thought up a plan to create a profitable bargain motel. They
only charged $4.00 per room back in the 1960’s. Although it was way to low they started to increase the rate
slowly. Finally they decided that $6.00 was a reasonable price for a room and thus the Motel 6 motels became what
they are today. In 1962 they opened the first fifty four room motel and it took off from there.
Today Motel 6 locations is the largest budget motel chain in North America, now a subsidiary of the French
hotel giant Accor SA, it has over eight hundred locations. It now has what they call an ‘extended stay Studio 6’
brand; this allows travelers to stay for a week or longer as low rates. One of the reasons this motel could be
built cheaper than the other ones is the owners were both construction workers and they did the work
themselves.
Although they did not use cheap construction materials, they did cut corners such as building the bed flush to the
floor to keep cleaning time down, the showers were round so the cleaning crew did not have to take more time to
clean in the corners; sheets were the wash and wear kind, there were no dressers in the rooms and at that time the
televisions were of the coin boxes kind, you had to put in twenty five cents and that lasted for six hours. Through
the years though Motel 6 locations started losing ground and they knew they had to do something to
get them back in the game.
They started to install telephones and color televisions, something that Greene and Becker did not do to keep costs
down. They also realized that this would not be enough so they launched an advertising campaign that would put
Motel 6 back on the map. Thanks to Joseph W. McCarthy Motel 6 advertising campaign would have a nationally known
radio announcer by the name of Tom Bodett. His famous line ‘we’ll leave the light on’ became one of the most
popular and used advertising lines in history. His deep gravel voice caught many people’s ear and it seemed to have
stuck.
Today having over a thousand motel 6 locations chains across the country, you can find one or more in
every state in the union, especially in the southern states, Florida, Georgia, and Alabama to mention just a few.
Of course you can find them all along the California coast. They may not have all the bells and whistles that other
motels have but Motel 6 locations is clean and inexpensive.
