U Haul Locations

Welcome to U Haul Locations website.  Here we take a look at the history of U Haul and its varying locations spread high and wide across the US.

Discharged from the navy in 1945, Sam Shoen and his wife Anna Mary wanted to move from Los Angeles California to Portland Oregon. They could not find anybody that had a truck big enough to haul their household goods and had to fit what they could in their car. There was a large wide spread need for such trucks as people were moving all over the United States.

Yes there were trailer lots in Los Angeles that would rent a trailer to haul from the back of the car, and usually charged about two dollars a day but they had to be brought back, which was not cost effective. People needed something to haul their goods one way as they were settling down and did not want to have to drive the truck back to where they got it. This is where the Shoen’s came into the picture and they acted on it right away.

Their vision ended up spreading like wild fire and thus started the U Haul locations business. They spread out the cost of ownership among many users, the covered wagon days were long gone as more and more of the bright orange trucks were seen across the United States and Canada. The first trailers in their fleet were bought from a couple welding shops and within two weeks their first trailer was parked in front of a gas station; offering it for rent. By the end of 1945 there were thirty 4’x 7’ open trailers in the Portland, Oregon and Seattle Washington areas.

They had the bottom part of the trailer orange with the logo U Haul on the back and the charges stated $2.00 per day were on there as well. Today U Haul is known around the United States and Canada as an equipment and truck rental company. They are based in Phoenix Arizona. U Haul locations is now owned by AMERCO which operates many other companies and is based in Arizona. The Shoen’s do own forty percent of the company today.

U Haul offers many types of equipment along with rental trucks of different sizes, as well as a pull behind trailers, carpet cleaners as well as offering storage places for their customers. They also provide LPG refueling, hitch and trailer wiring installation. One can always know it is a U Haul locations due to the large orange stripe. No over rental company has that color.
