In 1891 the United States National Bank was founded in Portland Oregon and remains in Oregon. Although it was first known as the United States Bank of Oregon in the late 1960’s it has bought and sold many other banks, thus naming in US Bank. Its historical roots go back almost a century and today they are still going strong. In the late nineteenth century when banking was much simpler they became a part of banking nomenclatures, they accepted made loans, extended them, gave cash, and received deposits.

The company’s origins were built out of efforts from a handful of very wealthy and influential businessmen during the late nineteenth century. Through the Oregon wilderness, a bustling commercial and industrial hub was forming. The settlers started arriving; building up towns and the settlers needed a place to put their money and prized possessions. As the towns started to grow there was more demand for a place to put the capital to build the towns, as well as personal. In 1872 there were only five banks located in Oregon but by 1880 there were sixteen.

Donald MacLeay an immigrant from Scotland made his fortune in the grocery and shipping business. George Washington Ewing Griffith, born and raised in Kansas was another wealthy businessman; these two men organized the US National Bank in 1891 and on February 9, 1891 opened their bank in rented offices in downtown Portland Oregon. During the first full day of business, fifteen people opened accounts in the bank and the deposits were over twenty thousand dollars. By the end of the year US Bank Locations had over 450,000 in deposits and capital stock.
