With the economy as it is and especially the farm economy it makes sense to stretch your hard earned dollars and
looking at used tractors for sale is one way to do this. If you’re in the market for a tractor it may not always be
to your advantage to look at new machines.
Before you begin looking at used tractors for sale get a good grasp of what you want to do with the tractor.
This narrows your selection down. Are you looking to mow hay and cultivate the garden? Do you want to till and work
30 acres for crops or 100 acres for hay? Do you need a front end dump on it for digging or cleaning animal lots or
shovelling the driveway in the winter time? Or are you just looking to pull loads of hay or firewood from the
source to the house or barn? Do you need a PTO unit?
The answers to these questions can help channel the search for used tractors for sale. They will define how
large of a tractor you need, and what other equipment you may need. If you already have equipment then that
dictates much to as your search for used tractors for sale is with consideration of fitting the equipment you
have.
Most farm magazines will have a section that lists many good used tractors for sale but even with this there are
other considerations. There are also many places online that have used tractors for sale, from farm equipment
retailers to eBay. How far the tractor is from your farm is a big consideration. If you don’t have a trailer big
enough to haul it on then it means finding someone to haul it for you.
Another factor is often brand preference – there are some that have a strong preference for International, or
Allis-Chalmers or John Deere. Still others don’t care as long as it does the job needed. Are you interested in the
older tractors? Many people like the classic cars but there is a special kind of person that preserves classic
tractors too!
When you find a number of tractors to consider look them over closely. Check maintenance records but also look
at the machine itself. The motor, the condition of the hydraulic fluid and oil and the way it runs says much about
the care it’s received. Don’t assume the gauges all work and are accurate – ask. Most people won’t outright lie to
you but they may not tell the whole truth or volunteer information – ask questions!
If repairs are needed be sure to factor that in to the price paid. While shipping is a concern for you it isn’t
to the seller. Don’t expect the seller to drop a reasonable price because you need to have the equipment shipped.
If you are buying a tractor to restore consider carefully missing parts and other factors that will affect
price.
Buying a used tractor can be a great way to save hundreds if not thousands of dollars. A good used tractor with
good maintenance is an investment that can last for years.
Used tractors for sale are easy to find but make sure you get the right one for the job you need. The wrong
machine isn’t a bargain no matter the price.
